Self-management:
During my course of study at Southampton Solent University, I have been able to develop my self-management skills in a couple of ways. Firstly, I try as much as possible not to shy away from challenges, as they will enable me to learn new things. Learning new things such as Microsoft access in my Data Analysis and IT classes has open my mind to a whole new lot ranging from how to organise data, how to use Google Analytic to track website activities and many more. Also, being able to undertake independent learning so as to obtain good grades in all of my in-class test as well as meeting deadlines has taught me time management. This also has reflected in my attendance at school where I have been able to keep it at a 100% till date. Working in groups during seminars in class has gone a long way in improving my flexibility and readiness to accepting new ideas. I also intent to develop this skills by taking on more challenges here at Solent University in order to build my self-management skills more and effectively.
Team working:
Team working is an essential skill to adopt when working in groups. Here at Solent University, I have been developing this skills by co-operating and contribute to discussions as effective as possible in seminar classes and group presentations in class. It has also taught me how to respect other people’s opinion and ideas. I intend to develop this skills further by engaging in as many group work as possible here at Solent University, to make sense of ideas developed by other group members. Sometimes, I ask questions in a constructive manner during group sessions in class, which shows that I am trying to make sense of my own understanding of the subject discussed at that moment. I also try to listen to others in the group and work upon what I hear.
Business and Customer awareness:
Business and customer awareness skills has a lot to do with an understanding of the key drivers for business success and the need to provide customer satisfaction. This have I been developing significantly through my participation and attending of the Marketing in business classes, which focuses on the marketing skills necessary to ensure positive results when working in a marketing role in business. In the process of developing this skill, I have learnt some basic key principles to enable me evaluate market research, as well as explore elements of the promotional mix which is inclusive of social media tools. This skill will be further developed as I advance into the remaining part of the marketing in business course in the year 2015. I will also undertake independent learning and prepare myself to take a professional certification course such as the Chartered Institute of Marketing test (CIM).
Problem solving:
The ability to analyse facts and situations and applying ingenious thinking to develop appropriate solutions is important in all areas of live when solving problems. The first step for me is to identify the problem, and then if possible, share it in school with my student support tutor Viara Dulguerova. As the old adage goes: “a problem shared is a problem half solved”, and this for me has always been a guide to developing my problem solving skills. Throughout my studies at Southampton Solent, I always make sure to email my tutors anytime I am faced with a task Again, in my IT classes, I have been faced with challenges in Microsoft Access. Here, I learn how to sketch out a plan of action on paper before implementation of the action can commence. All this in a nutshell helps me to develop my problem solving skills. I hope to develop this skills more by always thinking outside the box. In addition, I will start playing mind games and solving cross-word puzzles frequently, as this would build up for, an analytical mind necessary for problem solving.
Communication and literacy:
Throughout my study here at Southampton Solent University, I have always thrive to be precise, articulate and consistent when carrying out assessment tasks for submission. This has as a result developed my ability to produce clear structured written work. I have also been engaged in presentations which have been presented to my tutors and colleagues, where I had to pitch to the class. In this sessions, I have learnt the essence of clear verbal communications as a means of passing the right information during a presentation across to the class in an effective manner. Interpersonal communication skills is therefore necessary and is an inextricable part when developing communication and literacy skills. Developing this skills would be listening to and learning what other people have to say.
Application of numeracy:
Having mathematical awareness and being able to compute general arithmetic is an essential skills needed when handling the financial aspect of a business. Application of numeracy for me is a skills I am quite confident with, owing to the fact that I have studied mechanical Engineering as a previous course which exposed me to a wide range of mathematical equations and processes. I plan to strengthen this skill by carrying out independent mathematics learning and testing my numeracy at nationalnumeracychallenge.org.uk on frequent bases.
Application of IT:
Most or part of the units in Marketing with Advertising management at Southampton Solent University, especially Data analysis and IT sessions, are based on basic IT skills for its learning process. For example, Personal and professional developments demands student to build an online digital profile to enhance our employability, and this has gone a long way in developing my internet skills immensely. School works and assignments has facilitated my familiarity with word processing, file management and internet search engines which has significantly boost my IT skills. Also, emailing frequently to keep in touch with my tutors has been a big plus to this development. This skills will be further developed by going online to learn new software packages such as Adobe, Oracle and many more.
